Angel Reese arguably had her best game of the season on Friday against the LA Sparks, finishing with 24 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and one steal. The “Chi Barbie” shot 9-of-12 from the field, including a 3-pointer that had the home crowd in Chicago growing wild.
The euphoria of the win over the Sparks, however, quickly went down the drain following Reese’s post about a season-ending injury on X (formerly Twitter):
“All I have ever wanted was to come into the W and make an impact. I can confidently say I have done that and will strive to keep doing so. I’m filled with emotions right now that I have a season-ending injury but also filled with so much gratitude for what is next," Reese posted on X.
“Although this is God’s timing and not mine, I am finally able to give myself a physical and mental break.”
Angel Reese’s wrist injury has cut her season short. She has been listed as questionable on the Sky's injury report ahead of the game against the Dallas Wings on September 8.
Reese averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals in 34 games for the Chicago Sky. The injury also ends her battle with rival Caitlin Clark for the Rookie of the Year honors.
More than the statistics, Reese quickly established herself as one of the WNBA’s biggest draws. She has various endorsement deals and recently launched her podcast. The league and her fans can’t wait to have her back healthy again.
When will Angel Reese return?
Angel Reese will not play another minute for the Chicago Sky even if the team makes the playoffs. The Sky and the Atlanta Dream are tied for the eighth and final postseason spot with an identical 11-22 record.
With still six games remaining for both teams, the battle for the last playoff ticket will likely go down the wire. Reese, however, hinted about a potential return time frame.
The All-Star forward’s tweet had this at the bottom part of the message:
“You’ll still see me being the biggest cheerleader on the sideline! And Unrivaled league, see you soon!”
The Unrivaled league, founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart will launch in January 2025. Angel Reese has already confirmed her participation in the 3x3 tournament which has a minimum salary of $100,000.
The former LSU star’s appearance is highly anticipated as she has over 4 million followers on Instagram, the most in the league.
The wrist injury ended her WNBA season but Reese could return for the Unrivaled league’s opening. Three months should be enough for her to recover and rehabilitate before competing in the said tournament. Until then, Sky and Reese fans will have to be content watching her play cheerleader.
