Nancy Lieberman has been in the spotlight over the last few days. On Sunday, the Dallas Wings named her one of their analysts with Ron Thulin to call the game against the Indiana Fever. Many thought that instead of Lieberman, it would be Sheryl Swoopes, a known critic of Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, who would partner Thulin.
Lieberman continued to grab the headlines when she appeared on the “Stephen A. Smith Show” to talk about her current friendship status with Swoopes. The former Detroit Shock coach told Smith that Swoopes “got upset” when she asked her to get her facts straight about the former Iowa superstar.
With Lieberman taking center stage, basketball fans want to know more about her.
Nancy Lieberman is a team ambassador of the Dallas Wings
In March 2023, the Dallas Wings announced Nancy Lieberman as their team ambassador. Lieberman is a well-known name in Dallas basketball circles, having played with the Dallas Diamonds of the Women's Basketball League (WBL) in 1980-81 and 1984. She was named WBL Rookie of the Year in 1981.
The Wings released a statement following Lieberman’s hiring as team ambassador:
“As one of the most prominent voices in our sport, Nancy has been an advocate for women’s basketball throughout the country and especially in the DFW, dating back to her days as a number one draft pick for the Dallas Diamonds. With her ties in North Texas and beyond, she is no doubt a great addition to our front office team.”
Nancy Lieberman also serves as an analyst for Wings games, sometimes rotating with Sheryl Swoopes and Fran Harris.
Nancy Lieberman is also an analyst for the OKC Thunder
When the WNBA goes on vacation, the NBA takes center stage. Although Nancy Lieberman lives in Dallas, she takes her talents to Oklahoma to serve as an analyst for Thunder games. The Hall of Famer is usually spotted doing pregame and postgame shows.
Lieberman held the same role for the Thunder from 2012 to 2015 before calling it quits. She returned in 2021 and has been there since. NBA fans will get to see her more often next season, as Oklahoma is one of the biggest challengers to the Boston Celtics’ championship defense.
“Lady Magic” had experience playing in men’s pro basketball
Nancy Lieberman got the moniker "Lady Magic" for her play-making skills. She was such a talented passer and scorer that she once made it to the professional men's basketball league. In 1986, the Springfield Fame of the United States Basketball League (USBL) signed Lieberman as a backup point guard.
Lieberman hardly played in the WNBA
Nancy Lieberman hardly played in the WNBA. She was already 38 when she played for the Phoenix Mercury in 1997, the league’s inaugural year. She returned to play one game for the Detroit Shock in 2008 when she was already 50, the oldest in league history.
Lieberman built a Hall of Fame career in roughly three decades of basketball.
