WNBA Finals MVP Jonquel Jones drops 3-word reaction after helping Liberty win maiden title

The 2024 WNBA season concluded on Sunday with the New York Liberty capturing their first-ever title by defeating the Minnesota Lynx 3-2 in a thrilling best-of-five series. In the decisive Game 5, New York secured a dramatic 67-62 overtime victory. Former league MVP Jonquel Jones earned WNBA Finals MVP honors for her stellar and consistent performances throughout the series.

In the high-stakes, do-or-die Game 5 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, veteran center Jones delivered an impactful performance. She scored 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, despite missing both of her three-point attempts. The five-time WNBA All-Star also pulled down six rebounds, handed out one assist and made a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line, helping the Liberty secure their championship victory.

Over the course of the five-game, Jones averaged 17.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists. Her steady production and impactful performance earned her the coveted WNBA Finals MVP award. Following the Final MVP and championship win, the Liberty star posted a succinct three-word reaction on X (formerly Twitter).

"WE CHAMPIONS BABY!!!!" Jones wrote.

The former WNBA Most Improved Player award-winner was overwhelmed with emotions and was ecstatic upon receiving the MVP award.

"Y'all know my story, y'all know how many times I've been denied it but, it was delayed that's all it was," said Jones. "I'm so happy to do it here."

Jonquel Jones determined to grow the game in Bahamas

After leading the New York Liberty to the championship, Jonquel Jones expressed her heartfelt commitment to giving back to her homeland, the Bahamas. In an emotional post-game press conference, Jones shared her mission of improving the lives of young girls in the Bahamas and providing them with opportunities to dream big.

"I'm just trying to get the infrastructure in the Bahamas better for girls' sports," Jones said. "I want to make it my mission to really grow the game in the Bahamas because we have so much natural talent... I want kids to be able to stay home with their families. & play."

Jones' performance in Game 5 stood out, especially as stars Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu struggled offensively. Breanna shot just 4-of-15 from the field, while Sabrina endured a historically poor outing, shooting 1-of-19 from the floor, including 1-of-10 from 3-point range. Jones' steady scoring throughout the game was crucial in fueling the Liberty’s comeback victory on Sunday.
