The Connecticut Sun caused ripples in the WNBA community after a cryptic Instagram post featuring rising star DiJonai Carrington on Wednesday afternoon. The Sun posted a picture of Carrington with the eyeballs emoji as the caption.
Carrington was holding a sign that reads, "The Sun is back at TD Garden" leaving fans to ponder about the possibility of Connecticut relocating.
Fans reacted to the news in the comments. Some were supportive of the move.
"Please tell us we are permanently moving to Boston," one fan commented.
"Listen if y'all come here it'll change my life," another fan added.
"YES!" a third fan added simply but excitedly.
Some fans protested a potential relocation.
"Please don't move to Boston I cannot root for a team from Boston," a fan commented disagreeingly.
"I don't mind them having games at TD, but please don't leave CT," another fan added. "I love having a professional team in CT."
"Please tell me this is just for one game because I'm gonna lose my mind if its otherwise," a third fan commented in protest.
In the post, the Connecticut Sun tagged TD Garden, the home arena for the Boston Celtics in the NBA. The Sun played a game at TD Garden last August. They defeated the LA Sparks 69-61 in front of a sold-out crowd.
It's not uncommon for teams' home arenas or stadiums to be located outside of their hometowns, but a relocation can't be ruled out as the WNBA continues to grow.
The Connecticut Sun have moved once in the organization's history, relocating from Orlando to Connecticut following the 2002 season. The Orlando Miracle lasted from 1999-2002.
Connecticut Sun sending three players to Unrivaled League
The Unrivaled League is set to tip off in January 2025. The 3x3 basketball league was founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart and will serve as an alternative league for WNBA players in the offseason.
Due to the WNBA's short season, players traditionally play overseas during the offseason or join other professional leagues. Unrivaled will feature some of the biggest stars in the WNBA spread across six teams, giving players greater earning opportunities beyond the WNBA.
The league will feature a 36-player pool with 34 confirmed players so far, three of which are Connecticut Sun stars. Alyssa Thomas, Marina Mabrey and DiJonai Carrington will join Unrivaled for the inaugural season in 2025. Carrington will suit up for Mist BC, Mabrey will play for Phantom BC and Thomas was selected to play for Laces BC.
