The WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year has had terrific candidates all season. The 2024 campaign saw several players reach new levels in their game, becoming key figures on their respective teams and helping them compete for top spots in the standings or playoff berths.
After another exciting week, it's time to break down the latest top five WNBA MIPOY candidates.
Top 5 WNBA MIPOY candidates after Week 14
#5. Dearica Hamby, LA Sparks
Dearica Hamby has been a shell of the player she was in the first half of the 2024 season. The LA Sparks star averaged 15.7 points last week in three games. She added 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists. In the 2024 WNBA season, Hamby has averaged 17.3 ppg, 9.4 rpg and 3.5 apg while shooting 50.8% from the field and 62.6% from the free-throw line.
#4. Ezi Magbegor, Seattle Storm
Ezi Magbegor has been consistent throughout the season, especially on the defensive end of the ball. The forward/center had a discreet season on offense, scoring four, 13 and eight points, respectively, in three games in Week 13.
She was active, grabbing rebounds and averaging 5.8 per game in September. Magbegor is averaging 11.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg and 2.0 apg with the Storm while adding 1.1 spg and 2.2 bpg and shooting 50.9% from the field and 87.4% from the free-throw line.
#3. Kahleah Copper, Phoenix Mercury
Kahleah Copper led this list for the majority of the 2024 WNBA season, but her numbers, especially scoring-wise, decreased in the past couple of weeks. Copper still put on a decent 16.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 2.7 apg. With that performance, her averages are 21.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 2.2 apg. She shoots 43.8% from the field and 80.7% from the free-throw line for the Mercury.
#2. Chennedy Carter, Chicago Sky
This is where everything starts to change. Chennedy Carter has had one of the most impressive WNBA seasons in 2024, going from signing a training camp deal to becoming the best player on the Chicago Sky at this moment, even over Angel Reese.
When she missed time, the team looked lost, and once she returned to action, things started to get better. Charter and the Sky won last week's two games, averaging 21.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 6.5 apg. To say she's important for that team is an understatement and she could finish the season higher on this list.
For the season, she averages 17.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 3.1 apg, shooting 50.0% from the field and 74.8% from the free-throw line.
#1. DiJonai Carrington, Connecticut Sun
Perhaps DiJonai Carrington isn't the flashiest player on this list, the most prolific scorer or playmaker, but she's become a consistent agent for the Connecticut Sun. The guard/forward was asked to show more consistency this campaign, which she did, helping her squad become one of the best in the WNBA.
Carrington showed her fierceness on defense, going against the best players on opposing teams on a nightly basis. She has averaged 12.9 ppg (12.0 ppg this week), 4.8 rpg and 1.5 apg while recording 1.6 spg in 34 duels. She shoots 40.8% from the field and 76.8% from the free-throw line.
