There are less than two weeks until the start of the 2024 WNBA playoffs and the race for the Most Valuable Player is heating up. A'ja Wilson had pretty much locked up the award before the Olympic break but a recent injury could open the window for Napheesa Collier and Caitlin Clark.
It would take mind-boggling performances from both to overtake Wilson, who is having one of the greatest seasons in WNBA history. The two-time MVP is averaging 27.3 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.9 steals and 2.7 blocks per game.
Wilson is also shooting 52.7% from the field, 33.9% from beyond the arc and 85.5% from the free-throw line. She missed Sunday's game due to an ankle injury, which the Las Vegas Aces deemed not concerning. However, it's unclear when the 28-year-old will be cleared to return.
WNBA 2024 Most Valuable Player Ladder - Week 14
#5 - Alyssa Thomas | Forward | Connecticut Sun
- Week 13 Ranking: #5
- Games Played (Week 14) - 3 GP (1 W, 2 L)
- Average (Week 14) - 7.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 8.7 APG, 2.7 SPG 0.3 BPG
- Average (Season) - 10.6 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 7.7 APG, 1.7 SPG 0.5 BPG
Alyssa Thomas remained in the Top 5 of the WNBA MVP ladder despite Kaleah Copper's performances for the Phoenix Mercury and Sabrina Ionescu's impact for the New York Liberty. Thomas might not be as aggressive on offense for the Connecticut Sun but she's the motor that keeps the team running.
The Sun lost two games last week with Thomas preventing a third straight one on Sunday by dropping a triple-double. She had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in the much-needed win over the LA Sparks.
#4 - Breanna Stewart | Forward | New York Liberty
- Week 13 Ranking: #4
- Games Played (Week 14) - 2 GP (2 W, 0 L)
- Average (Week 14) - 17.5 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.5 SPG, 2.0 BPG
- Average (Season) - 20.3 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.8 SPG, 1.4 BPG
Breanna Stewart, the reigning WNBA MVP, remains at the No. 4 spot. While some analysts have Ionescu in their rankings, Stewart deserves credit for helping the New York Liberty to the best record in the league.
"Stewie" struggled following the Olympic break but has looked better in recent games. She's not favored to win the MVP but the Liberty are the favorites to win the WNBA championship.
#3 - Caitlin Clark | Guard | Indiana Fever
- Week 13 Ranking: #2
- Games Played (Week 14) - 3 GP (2 W, 1 L)
- Average (Week 14) - 25.0 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 10.0 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.3 BPG
- Average (Season) - 19.2 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 8.5 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.8 BPG
Caitlin Clark is still playing amazing basketball for the Indiana Fever, although their loss to the Minnesota Lynx stung. That lone loss puts Clark at No. 3 in this week's WNBA ladder rankings, since she was going head-to-head against Napheesa Collier.
The UConn product helped the Lynx snap the Fever's five-game winning streak.
Clark has a chance to regain the second spot next week but she will need to lead her team to another winning streak or hope a team slows down Collier.
#2 - Napheesa Collier | Forward | Minnesota Lynx
- Week 13 Ranking: #3
- Games Played (Week 14) - 2 GP (2 W, 0 L)
- Average (Week 14) - 22.5 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 1.0 APG, 1.0 SPG, 1.5 BPG
- Average (Season) - 20.6 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.9 SPG, 1.3 BPG
Napheesa Collier is back at the No. 2 spot for Week 14 after guiding the Minnesota Lynx to a 2-0 record, including a win over Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever. The Lynx ended the Fever's five-game winning streak, giving Collier the upper hand over Clark in the WNBA MVP race.
Collier finished fourth in the MVP voting last year and has turned into one of the best players in the league. She will likely have a top 3 finish in MVP voting.
#1 - A'ja Wilson | Forward | Las Vegas Aces
- Week 13 Ranking: #1
- Games Played (Week 14) - 2 GP (2 W, 0 L)
- Average (Week 14) - 25.0 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 1.5 APG, 2.0 SPG, 2.5 BPG
- Average (Season) - 27.3 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 2.4 APG, 1.9 SPG, 2.7 BPG
A'ja Wilson's ankle injury is not a cause for concern for the Las Vegas Aces. Wilson should have the WNBA MVP award locked up, although the chance for unanimous selection is in jeopardy. In Wilson'a absence, the Aces lost to the New York Liberty on Sunday.
Wilson's next chance to suit up is on Wednesday against the Indiana Fever. The Aces have not locked up the No. 4 seed so they will need to win all their remaining games to gain momentum heading into the playoffs.
