Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 Day 5: India stand second with 20 golds on Medals tally.

DAY 5

India have stamped their authority on the second position on the fourth day of the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi. India has bagged 6 gold medals today taking their gold medals tally to 20. If that wasnt good news, the Indian contingent is assured of two silvers atleast as Somdev Devvarman and Sania Mirza have made it to the final of the respective singles event.

The gold rush today started with the women’s archery team bagging the first position in the Recurve category. Deepika Kumari, Dola Banerjee and Bombayala Devi Laishram formed this team that beat England in a breathtaking match that saw India win by a margin of a single point! The score was 207-206. Yesterday, the Indian men’s archery team lost out to England in the final by a couple of points hence this was an apprpriate revenge.

DAY 5

The Indian shooting contingent kept up its good run of form in the Commonwealth Games so as to add to more gold medals to the Indian tally. Gagan Narang paired with Imran Hasan Khan to win another bit of yellow metal for India in the 50m rifle event. Shooter Vijay Kumar brought home the other gold medal in 25-metre rapid fire pistol category. India have made the most of its potential in shooting at this Commonwealt Games.

Gagan Narang has continued his great run as he bagged his third gold medal today. Another marksman who has been impressive throughout is Omkar Singh. He too bagged his third gold medal today when he beat Singapore’s Bin Gai by a comprehensive margin. The Indian shooting contingent was India’s best bet today with 35 medals at stake and they stood up to the challenge.

The other realm where India dominated was wrestling. The women have taken up the baton from the men and fetched us two gold medals. Alka Tomar won the gold medal in the 59kg category freestyle wrestling. She was one of India’s medal prospects going into the games and stood upto the expectations. On the other hand, Anita, a relative youngster beat Megan Budyens of Canada in the final to clinch the gold medal. Anita took her medal by beating Tonya Verbeek of Canada.

Indian Boxers meanwhile have been steadily progressing towards the medals. Olympic medalist Vijendra Kumar beat a Kenyan Boxer as he surged ahead in his category. All boxers before today have made it to the next rounds of the games and as we come closer to the final rounds, the contest will get keener.

Ashish Kumar made India proud once again as he bettered his bronze medal performance in the floor exercise event to get a silver in the Vault. He finished just behind Luke Folwell of England.

Somdev

Somdev

India have made two more medals as Somdev Devvarman and Sania Mirza have reached the finals of their respective singles event. Leander Paes and Sania Mirza disappointed as they crashed out of the mixed doubles event yesterday. However, the bigger disappointment came from the jodi that India so ardently supports when on the court – Lee-hesh are now out of the doubles competition and unfortunately for India without a medal. Let alone gold!

In Hockey, Indian eves made sure they stay in hunt for the semi-finals spot. The women’s team beat Trinidad and Tobago in a one sided match that ended 7-0!

The Indian men’s hockey team will also be in action against Pakistan on Sunday, and if you were hoping for tickets, well its house full!

On the medals tally, England are now drawing very close to India’s second position with 17 golds but since we have a couple of medals secured and Gagan Narang in for 3 more medals we can be optimistic about our position. India will need to buck up though, thats for sure.
