Kolkata and the Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders owner and Saurav Ganguly

Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL team owned by Shah Rukh Khan and lead by Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly had finished 3 IPL seasons without entering semis even a single time. So, the team management decided to make some changes in IPL auction 4. Kolkata Knight Riders had got tremendous fan support since the team joined both SRK fans and DADA fans together. But there are controversies created when the team management announced that they are not retaining DADA for IPL 4.

Fans started showing disinterest in Kolkata Knight Riders since then, and there were rumours that Kolkata Knight Riders will take DADA in auction back. Then fans almost lost interested in Kolkata Knight Riders and waited to see who buys DADA in IPL 4.

As of nobody expected it has been shocking for all the cricket fans to see no IPL franchise has shown interest in buying Sourav Ganguly. The fans of Ganguly who were excited to see which team is going to buy DADA are upset after seeing what happened. The word “Unsold” sounded humilating and insulting. DADA fans who waited to see him bat again became dissappointed. Not just DADA fans, people from entire country showed their support to Ganguly. Ganguly is the person who scored tons of runs and captained to guide Team India on number of occasions.

If the teams considered his age a factor, then why there are Tendulkar,Gilchrist,Dravid and Warne still in IPL who are equally old as him.

Years back, Ganguly was removed from Indian squad saying he has poor form. Even after an outstanding comeback to Indian team, he was asked to retire and he did and gave chance for youngsters. Ganguly’s fans are frustrated to see the same happening in Kolkata Knight Riders as well. DADA topped the Kolkata Knight Riders’s highest run scorer list in IPL 1 and 3 with 349 and 493 runs respectively.Following this, there has been strong support to Ganguly by fanatics all over India. In twitter, topics related to Ganguly had been discussed and it had reflected in trending list of topics. Lots of groups, pages, communities, online forums showed people’s disinterest in KKR without Ganguly.

Founder of IPL,Lalit Modi tweeted “Why Dada was not Picked – is a answer even I am looking for. No one can Deny his Skills and what he brings to any Team.It will be IPL’s Loss”.

SRK said “the decision to drop ‘dada’ from the Kolkata Knight Riders team was taken with a very heavy heart, Dada is like a younger brother to me and I want to win more games together.” Talking to reporters, Khan reiterated that he always wanted Ganguly to be part of KKR.

But there are questions if this is said for truth or just as a formality to get DADA fans’ support back again. If he always had wanted to have Ganguly in Kolkata Knight Riders he would have already said that and so Dada would not have raised his base price or would not have wanted to be auctioned. Dada however rejected the 2 offers given in 2 days.

However fans wanted to see him as a player, not as a mentor that too when Sachin and Dravid were playing. Kolkata Knight Ridershave spent big money on Gambirm,Yusuf and picked lots of players to create an attractive team for Kolkata Knight Riders, but fans dont feel it as attractive enough without Ganguly.

“The IPL is a owner-based game. It’s run on a business model and not emotions. The owner will always see his profit and how much mileage he gets out of it. Shah Rukh Khan is a businessman at the end of the day, and he has to get the best players on board to win. But this whole SRK-Ganguly controversy could have been avoided, had it been handled more maturely,” says the gold medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Akhil Kumar.

This IPL auction has created disinterest in IPL for many fans, since this is just seemed to be a business done by people with non-cricketing brains.

Sourav would have hardly played one season more and retired himself. Then Kolkata Knight Riders fans then would have been KKR fans forever.

Before that not buying him and then saying “No IPL without DADA” and offering mentorship makes the fans even more upset.

We may not see full seats and even if there are, that might be for supporting opponents. Do you all remember the time when Kolkata fans supported RSA when India played against RSA in EDEN gardens for the reason that Dada was not selected?
