Dhoni: Insurance Cover of Rs 34 Crore for IPL

India World Cup winning Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is being touted as the highest insured player for the Indian Premier League –Season 4 beginning April 8. The Chennai Super King Captain, who led the team to victory in the last edition, has been insured for a whooping amount of Rs 34 crores.

According to ToI report, Dhoni’s insurance this year has been increased by Rs 24 crores from his last season insurance of Rs 10 crores. CSK has paid a premium of Rs 16 lakhs, which includes travel risk cover, medical emergencies, personal accident and loss of baggage.

However, the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar who has been playing for Ambani’s Mumbai Indians since the inception of IPL has an insurance cover of just Rs 12 crores while Suresh Raina, retained by Chennai Super Kings, has a cover of Rs 20.5 crores.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardena, who will lead the IPL debutant franchisee- Kochi Tuskers Kerela seems to be the highest insured overseas player at Rs. 20 crores while S.Africa’s speedster Dale Steyn playing for Deccan Chargers has a cover of Rs 16 crores.

According to ToI’s source within the insurance company, every franchisee owner has different way of insuring his players or team. “For example, Ambani has decided to take comprehensive cover for his team, for which he will pay around Rs 1.5 crores as a premium, which includes event cancellation cover, workmen’s compensation, personal accident cover, medical cover and so on,” he said.

The insurance will remain active till the final on May 28 but can be invoked incase of the player’s death, total disability, permanent partial disability or temporary total disability. The franchisee has to pay an injured player his fees even if he sits out of the tournament, according to one of IPL laws. The policy holder here will be paid a compensation incase a player sustain injuries during the event in and off the field. So, to cover up such expenses the franchisees are queuing up for insuring their players or teams.
