Starting off the season on a bright note last year, Arsenal FC slowly succumb to the mounting pressure and are now on the line of another season without a silverware, stretching the club’s trophy drought to seven consecutive years.
Arsenal recorded their last Premier League match win in February when they beat Stoke City 1-0. Injuries hurt them there after managing three draws against much weaker side which hampered their EPL title race.
Wenger has been forced to dig deep into his goal keeping option as the first two choice keepers Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny are out with injuries and Manuel Almunia manning the goal. These injuries even forced Wenger to call Jens Lehman back from retirement. The team had also been playing without the service of defensive leaders Thomas Vermaelen and Johan Djourou along with striker Theo Walcott.
However, there is a petite chance of reviving themselves this Sunday when they meet Blackpool at Bloomfield Road as Blackpool provide Arsenal with the opportunity to play against a less physical and attacking side. Moreover with Blackpool losing their last four appearances they would be low on confidence to take on the North London giants.
The gunners in their home match against the Seasiders in August thrash the visitors by 6 goals to nil. But now fighting to avoid relegation, the newly promoted side is certain to go all out against the Gunners as another lose would certainly mean Ian Holloway’s men dropping to the danger zone.
Meanwhile, it is also a door or die situation for Wenger’s side as another failure would virtually end their Premier League title hope after being dumped out of the Champions League and the FA Cup and losing to Birmingham in the League Cup Final.
With seven points behind the table topers Manchester United, albeit a game in hand, Arsenal’s drop in form has been a major concern. Had they won their last three winnable encounters against Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers they would have been just a point behind United with a game in hand and arguably title favourites.
Instead they drew them all and now, even if they beat Ferguson’s side on their May 1 encounter, United can still take the title if they win their other games. United at 66 points next face Fulham at home on Saturday and are very much likely to win the match and take their point tally to 69.
Arsenal has 59 points while Manchester city are three points below them at the third place. Chelsea at 55 points on Saturday will host Wigan Athletic at home while Tottenham Hotspur have slipped back in the race for a Champions League slot and lie fifth on 53 points.
So we will have to wait and see if Arsenal can renew their ambitions and keep alive their hope of not ending the season without a silverware and most importantly not stretching their trophy drought to seven years.
