Is Lord Tensai in for a WWE Title Run?

As you’ve probably noticed, Matt Bloom, the former Albert and A-Train, made his return to WWE the night after Wrestlemania 28. He is now known as Lord Tensai, and immediately was presented as a dominant force, completely wrecking mid-carder Alex Riley in a matter of minutes, winning the match due to referee stoppage. He did the same the next week against Yoshi Tatsu, who had been challenging Tensai over Twitter for a week. Once again, Tensai was completely dominant. Earlier this week on RAW, Tensai did it yet again, this time in an Extreme Rules Match against WWE’s poster boy, John Cena. Although the match went back and forth, Tensai dominated a good portion of it, eventually getting the pin after hitting the move formerly known as the Baldo Bomb/Derailer.

We all know that John Cena rarely loses on television, especially clean losses (despite David Otunga’s interference, this was an Extreme Rules Match, which means anything is legal, which in turn means that it can still be counted as clean). But, when he does, it’s generally against someone WWE is considering pushing as a main contender and possibly a future WWE or World Champion. It’s happened with both of the top current champions, CM Punk and Sheamus, and could likely happen with Tensai.

Despite Tensai’s age (he’s 40), the years he has been absent from WWE and touring Japan as “Giant Bernard” have done him a world of good. He learned how to develop better promo skills, a better move set, and serious fine-tuning to his in-ring skills. Not only that, but he has a completely fresh gimmick to work with. While there have been “foreign sympathizers” in the past, none have really done it the way Tensai has. It’s completely acknowledged who he has been in previous runs and that he is 100% American. However, instead of just saying “I hate this country and have taken a new home”, he’s actually using a gimmick name (which translates to, appropriately enough, “Destruction”) to embrace his new adopted home (unlike, say, Sgt. Slaughter, who simply said he sided with Iraq but otherwise stayed pretty much the same), and also learned the language during his time in Japan, making him bilingual and automatically giving him a more broad appeal.

If this wasn’t all enough, there is a rumor that he will be working with CM Punk once Punk’s program with Chris Jericho is over. Considering Punk is more or less the #2 guy in the company behind Cena right now and the current WWE Champion, Tensai could be in for the most major push of his entire career, possibly ending with a title run. Word has it that he has major support behind the scenes from both Vince McMahon, Triple H and John Laurinaitis, the three most powerful men in the company, and going one step further, it’s rumored that he was brought in specifically for a main event run.

While it’s hard to say how the fans will take to him in the long run, there are much, much worse choices you could have for a champion than Lord Tensai. He’s one of the better “big men” in wrestling today, and considering all the years he spent in Japan, he automatically has international appeal in Asian countries. In case you didn’t know, WWE is BIG on international appeal, as they always get huge numbers on their tours of other countries.

While nothing is certain, there is a very good chance Lord Tensai could be wearing major WWE gold in the near future. Stay tuned.
