John Cena is one of the most celebrated Superstars in the history of pro-wrestling. Widely popular amongst the kids, Cena remained the face of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for ten years. Throughout the 2000s, “The Champ” was the most sought out wrestler in the company. Needless to say, he was the biggest influence on the company’s market.
However, this ultimately Babyface of the promotion did not taste stardom overnight. In 1999, Cena made his pro-wrestling debut. After winning the Ultimate Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship in 2000, he was signed by WWE’s developmental program in the next year.
He finally made his main roster debut in 2002 and WWE’s history was changed for once and all. His first character on WWE was that of a conventional wrestler who aims to prove his superiority over everyone else.
He was signed to the SmackDown brand when he adopted the Rapper’s gimmick in the 2002. For the next two years, Cena continued to wonderfully live up to his character of The Rapper who rebels against the norms of the society. His mic skills complimented his in-ring performance and WWE found their next Superstar.
After two years, his character received a major change which continues to be his gimmick till date – his character of an exceptionally good man. Cena called this gimmick as goody-two shoes Superman. This marked the beginning of his superstardom.
After two years of brilliant feuds, Cena was now put against Kurt Angle in the No Mercy 2003. He lost to Angle but joined his team for the Survivor Series in which he survived alongside Chris Benoit. This chain of events worked very well with the crowd and he quickly became the fan-favourite. There has been no turning back ever since.
Inn 2004, he was the sixth-last person to be eliminated caused by Big Show. He went to put a memorable feud with the Big Show against whom he won his first singles Championship – the US Championship.
He man evented WrestleMania 21 and won the WWE Championship after defeating John "Bradshaw" Layfield aka JBL.
He was then brought to WWE’s flagship show, RAW where he feuded with Kurt Angle. In the next few years, he continued to win WWE Championship and WWE Heavyweight Championship by feuding against the likes of other top Superstars including Randy Orton, Triple H and Edge before starting feud with the Nexus in 2011.
Cena vs Nexus was a constant battle of dominance between one man and all eight former contestants of the first season of NXT, with Wade Barrett as their leader. The Nexus interfered in every match that was important for Cena. He teamed up with Edge, Chris Jericho, John Morrison, R-Truth, The Great Khali, and Bret Hart to take on the Nexus. Eventually, Cena was able to eliminate all the members of the Nexus in Royal Rumble 2011. This marked the end of his feud with the villainous stable.
After that, Cena was mostly involved in the high-profile matches against Kane, Wyatt Family, Randy Orton and many more including the upcoming talents such as Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins.
His last feud was against Roman Reigns when the latter was being established as the new face of the promotion. Cena added life to this fight by challenging Reigns on the grounds of all the doubts that fans held in their mind. This marked the end of Cena’s reigns as the face of the company after a successful run of fifteen years.
In 2017, Cena became a free agent and since then, he has been appearing on both RAW and SmackDown according to the demands of the storyline.
