Former Australian medium-pacer Clint McKay has announced his retirement from international and Australis’a first-class cricket. The 33-year-old will carry on playing in the English country circuit for Leicestershire and also play in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Thunder.

McKay tweeted about the end of his association with the Victoria Bushrangers, stating that it was a pleasure to be involved with the side.

In an international career that spanned just over six years, McKay took 97 wickets in 59 ODIs with best figures of 5 for 28. He also featured in 6 T20Is for Australia and played his first and only Test for his country against the West Indies in December 2009.

When asked when he felt things started to take a downturn, McKay said it was perhaps after the match against India, where Rohit Sharma scored his maiden double hundred, in 2013.

“I didn't have a great series of India (in 2013) and that was the beginning of the end (of my international career).

“I came back to Australia and had a good summer - I only played three games but I did quite well in two of those three games. It was a little disappointing to lose my spot but the young generation coming through have got some superstars in the making. They were performing quite well and it was great for them to get their opportunity. It was disappointing that it had to come at my expense but it's just one of those things that happens in the pressure of sport,” he said.

McKay’s best moment while playing for his country cme in Cardiff in 2013, when he removed Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Joe Root in successive deliveries to complete his first hat-trick in ODIs.
