Warner got injured during the second ODI

The Australian opener, David Warner has been ruled out of upcoming Bangladesh tour because of a broken thumb injury which he sustained while batting in the second ODI of the ongoing against England, reports ESPNcricinfo.

The explosive Aussie opener is expected to be fit for his country’s home series against New Zealand at the end of the year, however, as he will not need surgery on the thumb of his left hand.

"It's really disappointing," said the 28-year-old. "I never want to miss a match for Australia, but I'll be doing everything I possibly can to get back as quickly as possible."

Executive General Manager of Cricket Australia, Pat Howard, speculated that it would be about six weeks before Warner could bat and field again. "David has been told that the fracture will take at least four weeks to stabilise and a further two weeks before he can start batting and catching again," while also saying, "He will be reviewed by the specialist at the end of the month to determine when he can resume playing.”

Howard continued, "Ideally we'd like him to play the Sheffield Shield round beginning on 27 October as preparation for the New Zealand series."

The injury to Warner further depletes the experience and choices for a vice-captain in the Australian ranks, which saw the likes of Ryan Harris, Michael Clarke, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson and Brad Haddin retire before and after the cricket powerhouse lost the Ashes to England, away from home.

"When the selectors meet over the coming days to choose the squad for Bangladesh, they will be asked to nominate a vice-captain for that tour," Executive General Manager Howard said.

The left-handed batsman suffered the injury on the first ball he faced in the second ODI at Lord's on September 5 to his thumb after being struck by a Steven Finn bouncer. He retired hurt immediately and now has been ruled out of the rest of the series.

With the retirement announcement by Rogers and Warner’s broken thumb, Australia will go into the Bangladesh series with a fresh opening pair. The first Test will be played in Chittagong from October 9 to 13, and the second in Mirpur from October 17 to 21.
