Derek O'Brien takes name of Virat Kohli during GST Bill debate

Virat Kohli has been a consistent performer for India across all formats

Virat Kohli is a household name now, but it was pretty unusual to hear his name in a Rajya Sabha Debate. The name of the modern great, Virat Kohli was taken by TMC MP Derek O’Brien as a form of a case study during a Rajya Sabha debate.

In a high-quality debate, many parliamentarians from different political backgrounds raised their views and argued over the rules and regulations of the GST Bill. There was a lot of argument before the GST bill was eventually passed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The GST bill is considered as the biggest tax reform in the country since its independence.

Addressing to the Rajya Sabha, TMC MP Derek O’Brien stressed on the importance of implementing this crucial reform at its earliest and by doing this he pointed out the delay in passing the bill by taking the name of the current Indian Test captain Virat Kohli as an example.

“Sir, I want to end with a little story. There was a boy of Class X at Xavier School in Delhi — a little known Delhi school compared to fancy Delhi schools — he was born at the time the GST concept was first introduced. He was in Class X in 2005. The boy, who was in Class X, is today winning us fame and great victories in West Indies. His name is Virat Kohli,” he said.

“There are millions of young Virat Kohlis across the country who are looking at us today. For their sake and for the sake of India tomorrow, we need to deliberate, we need to debate, we need to legislate and we need to implement the GST Bill. The faster we do it, the better it would be,” O’Brien concluded.

Virat Kohli & Co are currently on Caribbean shores playing a four-match Test series against the West Indies and immediately after its completion, most of the team members will fly to the US for a historic T20 series. Kohli has been a prolific run-getter for India across all formats and it won’t be a surprise if he goes on to break many batting records before calling it a day.
