Let's hear from Akash Ambani, co-owner of Mumbai Indians: Very very pleased. We are very pleased with the squad that we have picked. Want to mention at this point that we lost a lot of ex-MI players and you will always be a part of the family. But very happy with the players. I think Boult and Topley we wanted because they both were left arm seamers. Of course we have seen Trent in Mumbai colours before. He plays well with Jasprit. We have been hurt by him for the past couple of seasons when he was not part of our squad. Lizaad Williams is also who we rate very highly. He is skiddy and bowls well at the death.

IPL Auction 2025 in numbers!

Players sold: 182
Split: 120 Indians, 62 Overseas
Amount Spent: ₹ 639.15 crore

23:12 (IST)25 NOV 2024

How did these manic couple of days unfold?

Well, where even do we start? The two Marquee sets were certainly going to make headlines and break records. And that's exactly what transpired: It began with the Punjab Kings using an RTM on Arshdeep Singh before going all out for Shreyas Iyer, shelling out a whopping ₹ 26.75 crore before an RTM from the Delhi Capitals saw Lucknow Super Giants being forced into bidding ₹ 27 crore for Rishabh Pant as he walked away with the fattest paycheck. Amidst this all, DC swiftly picked up KL Rahul for a cut price of ₹ 14 crore while Yuzvendra Chahal also went to Punjab as well.

While these bids were fairly along expected lines, Venkatesh Iyer returning to KKR for an eye-popping ₹ 23.75 crore certainly made heads turn. But as always, fast-bowlers commanded a lot of attention - Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami fetched big bucks in the Marquee round before Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan also drew a lot of bids. The same held true for Jofra Archer, Trent Boult and Josh Hazlewood, all of whom returned to one of their previous franchises. Oh, and Noor Ahmad went for a bumper price too with Chennai Super Kings raising a bid of ₹ 5 crore to ₹ 10 crore to deny Gujarat Titans an RTM.

Day 2 began quietly with Sam Curran, Washington Sundar and Marco Jansen going for steals. But once again, the fast-bowlers were the ones for whom teams broke the bank. Bhuvneshwar Kumar went to RCB for ₹ 10.75 crore while teams also splurged for Akash Deep, Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Kumar and Tushar Deshpande. There were some smart overseas picks too though with Spencer Johnson, Gerald Coetzee and Nathan Ellis going for what you'd call a steal, even as they are likely to be backups at best.

Of course, uncapped players commanded attention too. Priyansh Arya was the one who made heads turn as PBKS broke the bank for his services. Gurjapneet Singh and Anshul Kamboj were two fast-bowlers for whom CSK went all out while Rasikh Salam picked up a solid paycheck on the opening day himself. Towards the end, teams had to settle for a number of cost picks to round off their rosters although as many as six teams did not fill their entire roster of eight overseas players!

And of course, there was disappointment for some big names too - David Warner and Shardul Thakur did not find a team for IPL 2025 while Prithvi Shaw also met with a similar fate. So many narratives, discussions, what could have been done and what can be done going into the season - those discussions are bound to continue well into the build-up to the season alright!
