Virat Kohli's poor form not a concern for Sunil Gavaskar

Kohli walks back dejected after making a golden duck

The hopes of the Indian batting doing well in England were principally pinned on Virat Kohli, who already has 25 international hundreds to his name.

Kohli has been gaining a reputation as one of the best batsmen in world cricket, a notion only strengthened when he scored 119 and 96 in a Test match against the No.1 side at the time, South Africa, in Johannesburg.

But, as always, scoring runs in Test cricket in England is what makes the entire cricketing world take notice, and with that being the case, he would’ve been desperate to succeed in England.

He had never played a Test in England before this series: so the final stamp of approval on his class as a Test batsman was still missing. Unfortunately, he hasn’t done anything substantial in this Test series, as yet, to suppress the naysayers.

He has had scores of 1, 8, 25 and 0 in the 4 innings that he has played, making it one of his leanest phases in his international career till date.

Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 10,122 runs and 34 centuries in his long and distinguished Test career, feels that the 25-year old shouldn’t be too worried at his spate of low scores, as every batsman is bound to go through such phases at some stage in his career.

"I think batsmen go through lean patches and I am hoping that these two Tests have been that lean patch for him," Gavaskar, while speaking to NDTV at the end of day 3 of the 2nd Test, said.

The cricketer-turned-commentator said that luck is probably eluding the Delhi batsman at the moment and feels that it is just a matter of time before Kohli starts scoring big runs once again.

"Virat is a quality player. It is just a matter of luck going his way. The ball that he left today could have just probably grazed past the stumps but this one came in, which is very rare," Gavaskar explained.
