Once upon a time, the cricket world was ruled by the opening partnership of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag – India’s pride and terror of strike bowlers all around the world. From 2002, when the two opened India’s innings for the first time against England, they scored 3919 runs together, the 4th highest for opening pairs of all time.
Nowadays, we are not fortunate to see the destruction heaped by the duo from between 22 yards, but on Twitter, the two still pack a punch. From their interactions, it also comes out that they share a rare sort of friendship. This friendship, reflected in their perfect understanding during their playing days, is now seen through the effortless humour that they share with each other.
An exchange between them after India’s win in the 2nd Test is bound to bring a smile to some faces.
India’s win in the Eden Test put them at the top of the team rankings, and Sachin sent his congratulations to the team.
Sehwag replied to Sachin’s comment with appreciation, but also asked that commentators too be given ‘God ji’s appreciation. Sehwag, alongside Zaheer Khan, was one of Sachin’s former teammates who were on commentary duty at the Eden.
Sachin, of course, obliged, adding his blessings for the unpredictable Delhi dasher.
Sehwag, never quite done with his ribbing, picked on the words chosen by Sachin Tendulkar in his blessing, making a pun on the name of one of the products offered by Reliance, the owners of Mumbai’s IPL team.
Smashing balls out of the park since forever – the Nawab of Najafgarh who is now also the Nawab of word puns and inducing rib-tickling laughter. Usually, this could have been expected to be the end of the exchange, but it was none other than God on the other end. Sachin too had the perfect reply.
