Zaheer Khan feted by MCA following the end of the 5th ODI in Mumbai

For a spectacular career in which he had played a pivotal role in helping India’s surge to the number 1 position in Tests and contributed significantly to the 2011 ICC World Cup victory, Zaheer Khan was felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association on Sunday.

CricketCountry reported that the former left-arm pacer was hailed on the aftermath of the final ODI between India and South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The recently retired cricketer was presented with mementos by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and also the BCCI.

Born in Shrirampur, Zaheer represented his country in more than 300 international matches and scalped over 600 wickets in all formats combined. He was also a domestic stalwart for Mumbai, for whom he helped clinch the Ranji Trophy with a sterling spell of 5-21 against Baroda in the final of the 2000 season.

Reminiscing on his incredible career, Zaheer said, “I am honoured to stand in front of you and the one word that comes to my mind is that I am humbled and honoured. It has been a great journey made up of wonderful memories. It is an emotional moment for me to speak here. I have been overwhelmed by the love and affection shown to me in the last 10 days after retirement .”

Acknowledging the enormous support from various sources, he felt, “I was just really happy playing the game. Lots of support from different people in different stages of my career. Thank you very much all the respected members on the tiers. It’s a great honour.”

Overcome with emotion, Zaheer spoke about his parents’ encouragement. He reflected, “My mom and dad are here. Thank you. You have been really supportive of me in letting me chase my dream.”

Zaheer promised to continue his fruitful association with Indian cricket in one capacity or the other. He enthused, “I don’t think I have one link missing in my career. I will continue to be associated with the game in future also in some capacity.”

He also had words of comfort for MS Dhoni’s side after their demoralizing loss to South Africa in the final ODI. The 37-year old implied, “I know it was a tough day for you MS. To AB and team, you were always tough opponents and always brought the best out of me on the field.”
