Horror games always leave a long lasting impression on you. For the fans who love games of this genre, Evil Within will certainly bring some pure horror back as Bethesda Softworks and Tango Gameworks are all set to finally release (after initially announcing the release for August) the much awaited game on the 14th of October for PS3, PS4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Basic Plot and Characters

The gamer will be controlling the game’s lead character who is a veteran police detective who goes by the name ‘Sebastian Castellanos’. He will be supported by two other characters who will be functioning as his collegues: Juli Kidman and Joseph. The trio has to take on Ruvik who is pretty much invincible. This trio will be investigating a gruesome murder that happened recently and suddenly are encountered by a mysterious force. Sebastian gets knocked out cold, and when he wakes up, he finds himself in an evil world, and this is where the fight for survival (which is the basic theme of the game) begins.

Development

The development began by the end of 2010 under the codename ‘Project Zwei’. Shinji Mikami, who was the creator of Resident Evil was the game’s director and the development took place in his own studio. And once the development began, Bethesda Softworks bought the studio. Mikami wanted to make this game since over the last few years he felt that the horror games had more action, and the emphasis on survival wasn’t laid. The game is built on id Tech 5 and was announced on April 19 2013, with the official title, the consoles in which it was releasing alongside a live action teaser trailer.

On What to expect

One cannot expect the game to surpass some of it’s top class predecessors like Resident Evil 4, but still they have used the latest technology to showcase blood, horror and darkness to compete at the top with the best. Bethesda’s PR had already given a warning about the game’s fear factor, and that is why the gamers must create a balance while playing the game as to ‘when to run’ and ‘when to fight’ in order to survive. The enemies will be garbed in barbed wire and gore-drenched rags and guess what, you are not going to finish them off just by shooting them. Even a headshot is not going to be enough as they will get up after a few seconds. You need to set them on fire to completely get rid of them and even those matches are going to be limited in number, so use them wisely.

There are going to be many sources including some medical items to restore your health back to normal. And the weapons that are going to be available are revolver, shotgun, knife, grenades, and the Agony Crossbow, a projectile weapon that fires bolts capable of freezing, blinding, electrocuting, or exploding enemies. You can also set explosive traps for the enemies. The door animations can sometimes drag you down, but is also realistic. You have the option to kick it to open, but will invite trouble in that case, so it’s better to open it slowly, but obviously that will also increase the fear factor which the makers want you to experience.

The sudden appearances of zombies at various stages of the game can scare you like anything, and you will always have an eerie soundtrack with an evil laughter at the background. You have to maintain the player’s stamina levels to perfection so that it is easy to run and escape at times when you are out of ammunition. Basically, like mentioned above, you have to create a balance between escaping and fighting in order to survive in the game. The game will certainly appeal to the masses, and there were a few glitches reported by a few some months ago while playing the demo version and if they are sorted out, then a dark horrific experience awaits us all this October.
