The Spanish driver, who is currently in his 21st season in the open-wheel racing series, is under contract with the Aston Martin team until the end of the 2026 campaign. However, the two-time Formula 1 champion recently stated that his future beyond that contract remains uncertain, and the new regulations could influence his decision.

Sharing his thoughts on the prospect of his future during an interaction with the media, as captured by RacingNews365, Fernando Alonso stated:

"That (new regulations) will be very important, yes. Not definitively. I think I have to wait and see how next year starts and how motivated I am. Every year, the atmosphere is different at the beginning. There is a different feeling about how you perform, how competitive you feel, how motivated you are to keep your fitness at a high level, your personal situation, your family situation... All that plays a role in some important decisions in life."

"You have to feel when the moment is there, and I don't feel it yet. I get in the car, I'm on the grid, and I'm just so happy to be there. I'm motivated and I'm performing well. Eventually, the stopwatch will tell me when to stop. Or I’m in bad physical condition, or I have pain while driving or whatever—that can happen too."

Fernando Alonso, who made his debut with the now-defunct Minardi F1 team in 2001, previously retired from Formula 1 at the end of the 2018 season. He returned to the series with the Alpine team during the 2021 campaign before completing a move to Aston Martin ahead of the 2023 season.

The Spaniard, who had qualified in 10th place for the race, was able to fend off competition and move up the grid to clinch points in front of his home crowd. Taking to his Instagram to share his thoughts following the conclusion of the race, he wrote:

“We gave it our all on the track, and I think we had a great weekend with the fans at the @circuitdebcncat. Thank you all for the support. See you next year for more 🙏❤️.”

The ninth-place finish at the Barcelona race meant Fernando Alonso became the first driver to record points in 21 seasons in the history of Formula 1. The Aston Martin driver has now scored points in every season he has competed in—barring his debut campaign in 2001 when he was racing for a non-competitive Minardi outfit.

With the milestone achieved, Alonso and the Aston Martin outfit will now turn their attention to the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix with the intent of building on their positive outing. His best result for the Silverstone-based team came at the 2023 edition of the Montreal race, where he finished in second place behind winner Max Verstappen.
