Johnny Herbert feels Red Bull's young sensation, Arvid Lindblad, could even be better than Max Verstappen. The former FIA steward mentioned the young up-and-coming driver while discussing the struggles that Yuki Tsunoda has been facing at the Red Bull team alongside Verstappen.
The second seat at Red Bull has almost always been a poisoned chalice ever since Daniel Ricciardo left the team. Multiple drivers have been placed alongside Verstappen, but none of them have been able to even be competitive, let alone beat him. The latest to lose his seat because of underperformance was Liam Lawson.
The Kiwi driver lost his seat after just two races with the team, and as a result, he was replaced by Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese driver started the partnership admirably, but in the last few races, he has fallen back compared to Max Verstappen.
Talking about Red Bull's struggles, Johnny Herbert felt that Arvid Lindblad could be the driver who ends up being on Max Verstappen's level or even better than him. Talking about the second driver conundrum at Red Bull, Herbert told YaySweepstakes:
"You risk losing your seat when you struggle as much as Tsunoda. Just like Lawson, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon struggled as Verstappen's teammates. Mentally, you get hit after hit when you're constantly so far behind your teammate. Tsunoda is in a difficult position."
"There is a certain guy who won the Formula 2 main race in Spain over the weekend. A guy from Red Bull, and he has climbed up very quickly. That is Lindblad. Arvid has a good view of what he wants, and he wants to compete in Formula 1. He is the perfect candidate to replace Tsunoda. Is there anyone who could possibly be better than Verstappen? Yes. Could Lindblad be that? Definitely, but the real test comes when you have the seat with Max on the other side of the garage," he added.
Arvid Lindblad has impressed in F2 already, and the team has been trying to help him secure a super license. Many feel it's only a matter of time before the youngster makes it to F1.
"If Max Verstappen leaves, Red Bull already has super two talents": Johnny Herbert
When talking about young talents in F1, the name of Isack Hadjar is often mentioned, as the rookie driver has been brilliant for Racing Bulls. However, Johnny Herbert feels Lindblad would pip Hadjar in the hierarchy if the youngster wins the F2 title.
Irrespective of that, if Max Verstappen does decide it is time to leave Red Bull, the brand has two talents in Hadjar and Lindblad who could take over. The former FIA stewards said
"I think Red Bull would rather have the Formula 2 champion, especially because of Lindblad's rapid progress. Hadjar makes the decision difficult for Red Bull, despite the fact that he never became F2 champion. They now have two young talents and if Verstappen leaves Red Bull, as the rumours suggest, then they have two super talents who can drive for them."
Max Verstappen's teammate woes have been well documented now, but as the Dutch driver often says, if Red Bull builds a better car, this won't be a concern.
