Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has tipped Atletico Madrid to be the surprise contenders for the La Liga title this year. Atletico have had a brilliant start this season having won 8 games out of 8 played and their striker Diego Costa scoring at will has interestingly surpassed both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to sit pretty at the top of goal scorer’s list with 10 goals in 8 just games.
Wenger said, “For me, Atletico Madrid may well be the surprise [contenders for the title]. They are a very good team with a lot of strength in all parts of the pitch. They are certainly candidates for the title.
“They have very good players in the middle as well, and Diego Costa is just an animal – he can score from any position,” said the Gunners’ manager.
Atletico are second in the league table with 24 points ahead of derby rivals Real Madrid and just beneath champions Barcelona on goal difference.
They are also having a successful Champions League campaign topping group G with 2 wins. They will face Espanyol on 20th in their next La Liga fixture.
