Bayern Munich, the defending Champions League champions have been punished with a partial closure of their stadium for the Champions League quarter-final tie against Manchester United, due to the display of the homophobic banner from fans against Arsenal.

UEFA’s control and disciplinary body has ordered the closure of the section where the banner was displayed during the second leg match.

Bayern have also been fined €10,000 (£8,350) for their “discriminatory behaviour” over the banner which was directed towards German mid-fielder Mesut Özil.

UEFA has said in a statement that; as a result of “Bayern supporters … displaying of an illicit banner, the Uefa control and disciplinary body has decided to order the partial closure of the [stadium] in particular, the closure of sector 124 for Bayern’s next Uefa competition home match, namely their Uefa Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester United on April 9.”
