Benitez can keep Chelsea's European hopes up

Stoke City v Chelsea - Premier League

Chelsea‘s recent form in the Premier League has placed a serious doubt in the minds of Chelsea fans. “Can they qualify for UEFA Champions League next year?”

So why have the European giants’ performances degraded so drastically, despite them winning the Champions League last year?

Many criticize Rafael Benitez for his poor performance. My opinion is that he is doing his best. He has been at the club for just 3 months, but the fans want him to win every match. How can he do that in such a short timespan? Many write on boards: “RAFA out, RDM in.” There is no point in making such demands. They are just discouraging Benitez and affecting the club’s growth. Chelsea fans should remember the night when he won the Champions league for Liverpool with his clever tactics against AC Milan. Though Liverpool fell behind by 3 goals, they came back. Benitez’s change in tactics was a main reason for the turnaround. He made some notable changes in the team, and they came back to level AC Milan, and finally won on penalties. So why discourage such a manager who has made history?

The club’s recent performances have improved. The Blues are very much in contention for a Champions League spot for next season. Additionally, I would like to add one more thing for those who hate Benitez. After Sir Alex Ferguson was appointed as the manager of Manchester United, he finished 13th in the Premier League. So if someone like Roman Abramovich sacked him, or if every Manchester United fan discouraged him, what would have happened to the Red Devils? He has left a legacy at the club. The lesson to be learnt is to never judge a person within a short period of time. Every one needs time to adapt to the situation. The same is the case with Benitez. So let’s give him some time.

Now, what the club needs to achieve on the temporary basis is make sure they qualify for next season’s Champions League. Benitez’s work can no longer be ridiculed. With time, he is coming up with new tactics, and the players are cooperating with the manager well. However, his decision to start Torres in big matches could be a big mistake. Going by his current form, he is not fit to play in the big matches. However, Benitez said to Chelsea’s official website recently that Torres was improving day by day, and the hope is that he will. Thus, Chelsea fans should stop booing the manager, and allow him to do his job peacefully at the club.
