Last night’s historic German triumph has set all sorts of records worldwide. It has now officially become the most discussed single sports game ever on popular social networking site Twitter with a whooping 35.6 million tweets recorded during the match. The 2014 Super Bowl saw 24.9 million tweets.

With twitter offering people features during the World cup, millions worldwide have constantly been tweeting during the tournament and last night’s match saw a massive jump when it set records off the pitch apart from a few on it.

When the germans scored four goals in the space of six minutes inside the first 30 minutes of the game, twitter was in a frenzy with the fourth goal from Toni Kroos receiving the maximum number of tweets per second.

It was a ruthless performance from Germany as they became the first team to score seven goals in a World Cup semi-final. It’s a surprise that Miroslav Klose’s record breaking goal didn’t invite as many tweets as the next three goals. It probably has to do with the shock that we were all treated to by Brazil’s awful defence in front of their home crowd.

Another new record was set when Sami Khedira’s goal received the most number of tweets per minute as it approximately received 580,166 tweets.

Brazilian striker Fred has been receiving a lot of criticism during the tournament and was subsequently booed when he was substituted. He was the third most mentioned Brazilian player on twitter during the game with the top two spots going to Julio Cesar and Oscar who scored his team’s only goal right at the death. In Germany’s case, Klose, Kroos and Muller held the top three spots.
