  • Twitter looks all set to cash in on the World Cup graze by releasing official hashtags in order to track live scores and important events during all the 64 matches in the tournament.

As we all know, Twitter is the most popular micro blogging site in the world. And people from all around the world will certainly share their opinions on the tournament since it is the most decorated and the most followed tournament in the World.

So use #WorldCup and #Brazil2014 in your tweets in order to follow the action closely. Twitter released these tags in a blog post on 3rd of June. Also the fans need to follow @FifaWorldCup and @Fifacom as they are the official accounts of the governing body FIFA and the World Cup.

At the moment, hosts and tournament favourites Brazil are the most followed team.

More than 300 players from the 32 teams have official accounts on twitter and it’s no surprise that Portuguese Captain Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed one.

According to a survey, 50% of the tweets in 2013 about TV were related to sports and around 492 million tweets were about sports events. During the World Cup draw, in a space of two hours there were 1.7 million tweets about it.

Twitter also introduced a new concept called the Twitter XI Squad which is made up of the players who were mentioned the most on the site over the last three months.

The Indian football team might be a long shot away from making the World Cup, but the fans still follow the tournament in a crazy manner. As per a recent study by on behalf of Twitter . Based on a survey by Global WebIndex with users in UK we are expected to see the following behaviour by users on twitter.

  1. 46% of users agree football news breaks fastest on Twitter
  2. 31% of users watching Football on TV are also live on Twitter.

Though the above statistics are for UK , one can expect similar activity levels among the Indian Football fans as many of them are also active on Twitter. So in this world cup follow the live action via twitter.
