Chelsea skipper John Terry says he won't finish his career at another EPL club

John Terry knows that competition to keep his place would get tougher

John Terry who has made more than 400 appearances for Chelsea says that he will not play for any other club in the Premier League in case he had to leave the London club according to a report by Sky Sports.

The 34-year-old enjoyed one of his best seasons in a Chelsea shirt last term as he played every single minute for Jose Mourinho’s team on the way to the title. The Chelsea captain said that he is working really hard in order to remain in the plans of Jose Mourinho next season.

But the defender also concedes that there are no guarantees regarding his situation at the club and says that he could lose his place if his standards dropped.

"I am not taking anything for granted. The manager has said if I can keep my form, I am in the side. But, if I don’t keep my form, he will have no qualms about taking me out and putting someone else in.

"We have an honest relationship, I don’t doubt that he trusts me. Hopefully, I can repay that because he has been superb to me. I will give him everything. And he has been a father figure in my career so I owe him an awful lot. I realise one day that my career will come to an end so I want to give everything these next few years.

"Every summer I work more or less every day to give myself the best chance. If it comes to that point where I am left out of the side, I know it’s not through any fault of not trying," Terry told the Guardian.

Leaving in a dignified way

The Chelsea youth product who made his debut as a 17-year-old says that he will know that his time is up if he is not an automatic starter for the first team. And in such a scenario, the former England international intends on leaving Stamford Bridge in a dignified manner like his former teammate Petr Cech had done.

Cech was said to be a thorough professional when he had lost his spot to Thibaut Courtois last season before choosing to switch over to Arsenal. But unlike the Czech keeper, Terry would not consider joining another Premier League side and instead, prefer to move abroad.

"I could handle being out of the team," he said. "Petr Cech was a model professional last year and that is why he got the move he wanted, because of how well he reacted around the place.

“I have seen other players go the other way. I certainly would go down the Petr route and continue giving everything to the squad. If I then felt Chelsea were going to release me or thought I had nothing else to give, but I thought I could, then of course I would still want to continue to play. But that would not be in the Premier League."

Thoughts on Sterling

Chelsea have been relatively quiet in the transfer window whereas their rivals like Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool have spent big. City acquired the services of Raheem Sterling after spending a record amount of £49m on a British player.

Terry who was up against Sterling during his time at Liverpool says that the youngster is one of the best British talents at the moment. Sterling who received a lot of flak for the manner in which he left the club has found support in Terry who says the fault was not entirely down to the 20-year-old.

“Sterling was one of the best players I came up against last year. He caused a lot of problems and I think he is going to be a big player for them,”Terry said.

“It is a lot of money but what other English player could you go out and buy? For me, he was one of the best players in the league. There were things that he did not perhaps handle well but he is a young kid who wants to play right at the very top.

“And through no fault of his own he has had to go and do that at Manchester City because Liverpool did not make that grade last year. So I understand where he has come from and wish him well because I think he’s a top English player. Forget the money,” he told the Guardian.
