Cristiano Ronaldo subtly hits back at Gerard Pique's "easy" comment

From team-mates to rivals, the story continues

There is no denying the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo is currently at the top of the world. The Real Madrid star has had a great year thus far, walking away with the prestigious Champions League along with the Euro 2016 trophy. There was no stopping Ronaldo yet as the Portuguese captain was voted as the winner for Europe's best player of the year last night.

This was the second time in his career, that Cristiano Ronaldo won the award beating teammate Gareth Bale and Euro Golden Boot winner Antoine Greizmann to claim the prize.

The UEFA European Player of the Year trophy is the latest addition to his already congested trophy cabinet, equaling Barcelona rival Lionel Messi to have achieved the feat twice.

After receiving plaudits and commendation for winning the cherished prize in Monaco, the Real Madrid realised it was the right moment to strike the hot iron and respond to Gerard Pique’s controversial comment about the Los Galactico’s route to the final last season.

Prior to the Champions League draw last night, a fan asked Pique if he had any preferences for the draw and this was how Pique responded, "I'd prefer an easy group, with the third placed side from Italy in the last 16, the eighth placed team from Germany in the quarterfinals, the team that finished fourth from England in the semifinals, and the return legs all at home," Pique said.

The reply was directly aimed at Real Madrid, with Pique hinting at Real Madrid’s ‘easy’ route to the Champions League final in Milan last season.

Ronaldo was asked to respond to the jibe after winning the individual prize but instead made a very clever comment. Given his recent success, Ronaldo could have gone on with the argument but the Portuguese captain refused to argue about the discussion. He said, "Well, I'm not going to answer," he told the El Larguero radio show. "What I can say to Pique is that he can see my tweet [with a] very pretty photo."

Pique has already witnessed Ronaldo’s route from the Champions League, Euro 2016 and now to the European best player of the year and could soon watch him lifting the Ballon d’Or too.
