Wolfsburg and player Diego have confirmed that they will part ways after extensive talks took place between the player and coach Felix Magath. This news comes just two days after Diego was fined a hefty sum of 500,000 Euros for desisting to appear on the bench for the last match of the Bundesliga season.
The player moved to Germany after an extremely underwhelming season at Turin with Juventus. He was brought for a sizable sum of 15 million Euros and big things were expected of the Brazilian playmaker, but those expectations failed to transpire in a season littered with average performances on the pitch and starry tantrums off it.
Magath, the Wolfsburg boss whose team narrowly avoided relegation last season, spoke to the club’s official website and said-
“After talking with Diego, it was clear that further co-operation will be difficult and so it is better to separate.”
Diego echoed the views of the manager, by saying-
“I always felt comfortable at Wolfsburg, but I made a mistake. Now the club and myself will find the best solution.”
His contract has not been terminated by the club as of now, and he’s officially a part of the Wolfsburg ranks until the year 2014. He is scheduled to join the rest of the team for training in July, but it seems highly unlikely that he will be part of Magath’s plans next season.
Diego admits that he could go back to his native Brazil. He spoke to Globoesporte, and said that Botafogo had shown interest in procuring his services, but nothing concrete had emerged yet.
“Perhaps next week there will be news. Botafogo, no doubt, have shown interest, but there is no agreement yet,”
“Going back to Brazil, you get closer to the national squad. All that will be taken into consideration.”
He revealed that a few European sides were also interested, but refused to take any names lest the deals broke down later. He was relieved of some ‘safety’ which his salary gave him.
“I will continue training separately, here, at Wolfsburg, until I reach an agreement with a club,”
“I cannot mention any names of clubs now, after all there are two parties involved. We will see what is best for both. I have my contract and also a professional project. My salary gives me some safety.”
Diego’s agent had earlier declared that the midfielder would remain at Wolfsburg next season, but it seems like that was merely a pipe dream now. The reassuring salary that Diego gets might well prove to be a stumbling block in negotiations with many clubs, with only a select few willing to pay the humungous 7 million Euros per annum that the player is demanding.
Stay tuned to find out Diego’s eventual destination and whether he will finally be able to recapture his Werder Bremen years there.
