Diego To Remain At Wolfsburg Next Season, Says Agent

Wolfsburg’s Diego will not quit the German club this summer according to his father and agent, Djair Cunha. He said the player will stay in Germany for next year at the very least and is looking to ply his trade in Europe for many years to come.

Speaking to newspaper Funha, Cunha said-

“Diego will stay at Wolfsburg. He will fly to Germany on Monday,”

Diego has had a poor last season at Wolfsburg which has been plagued with poor performances and aspersions cast on his character and temperament. In a match in February, Diego won a penalty for Wolfsburg ten minutes from time. He snatched the ball from designated spot-kick taker Patrick Helmes and hit the woodwork, in a match that Wolfsburg went on to lose by one goal. He was later fined 86,000 pounds by the manager for failing to follow instructions. He was also removed from the squad for the upcoming game against Hamburg.

The final nail in the coffin seemed to have been laid in before the relegation six-pointer against Hoffenheim at the end of the season. Diego left the hotel room he was staying in when he was told that he would be starting the game from the bench, which left Wolfsburg with only six substitutes in a massively important game that might have resulted in them getting relegated. Although they went on to win the game 3-1 sans Diego, the management were far from happy with the Brazilian midfielder’s antics.

The player’s agent has played down the incident however, likening it more to a lover’s tiff rather than something really serious. He said-

“[The incident] is a thing of the past. It is just like a couple’s quarrel.”

Diego’s career has been on a staggering downward spiral for the last two years. The player is originally from Brazilian club Santos and enjoyed the best years of his career so far at German club Werder Bremen, where he was one of their most important players. In fact, him and Torsten Frings were called ‘the two motors of Bremen’s midfield’. In 2009, he was sold to Juventus for a record fee and had an underwhelming first season in Italy. He was quickly offloaded by Juve for a sizable loss and returned to Germany in a hope to recreate his lost form, but it has so far failed to materialize.

Diego senior is not worried though, and sees many more bright years ahead for his ward.

“At the moment, we are not thinking about returning to the Brazilian football. We have a goal of continuing in Europe for a long time,”
