East Bengal win 3-1 against SAI as they inch closer to another CFL title

Mehtab Hossain rolled back the years to give a virtuoso performance

East Bengal took a huge step towards retaining the Calcutta Football League title for a record sixth consecutive time when they beat SAI 3-1 with Do-Dong on the scoresheet again. SAI gave the defending Champions a scare when they pulled level in the early minutes of the second half but Bengal kept their cool to win match and are now a win away from having the record to their name after more than six decades.

East Bengal started the game in style as a Saumik Dey cross was deflected in by Subhankar Chatterjee. Chatterjee was under pressure from Bikash Jairu and tapped the ball into his own net. It was just the start Bengal were looking for as they settled into the match dominating possession. SAI were taken aback by the early goal as Bengal kept on creating chances.

Bikash Jairu had a great opportunity to double the lead, but the former Salgaocar winger fluffed his lines. SAI struggled to create chances as the players headed into the break with Bengal leading 1-0.

SAI came out for the second half flying equalizing in the opening five minutes of the match. Deep Chandra Ekka found himself free on the right wing and put in a perfect cross for Asaruddin, who headed the ball into the open net.

The Mehtab Hossain show

With East Bengal drawing the game, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting might have thought they had a chance to come back into the running for the league, but Mehtab Hossain had different ideas.

Th East Bengal fan favorite, who was left National team squad by Stephen Constantine for his lack of pace, showed that he did not require speed to perform in a pressure situation. The 29-year-old midfielder hit a piledriver past Sinod Bauri to restore East Bengal's lead within five minutes of the SAI goal.

Hossain then played a beautifully paced ball for the man of the moment, Do Dong-Hyun, to put the game to bed with 30 minutes to go. Hossain's through ball went in between Koushik Sarkar and Priyankar Dasgupta to Do-Dong who placed the ball into the far post with his first touch.

Do-Dong was taken off in the 62nd minute and was replaced by Ranti Martins, who had not started a game for quite some time. Bengal were happy to see the game out and are now one win away from winning the CFL crown.
