Edwin van Der Sar is one of a kind when it comes to keepers. He is rated as one of the best keepers of all time but he has also played with the best in business as well. The Dutchman has represented great clubs like Juventus, Ajax, Manchester United while also having a spell at Fulham
So the keeper was asked to name the six best players in his opinion he has played with and there were definitely surprises in his selection. The 45-year-old decided to leave out the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Edgar Davids.
We started in goal and who else better than Edwin Van Der Sar himself between the sticks.He was hesitant to pick himself in the beginning but decided to stick to his decision become the team’s stopper.
Next he moved onto the defence of his side. Being the amazing keeper he decided he only needs one defender and that was former United teammate Rio Ferdinand The Englishman was a rock at the back for the Red Devils and had a great understanding with Van Der Sar
But the legend started to struggle when it came to picking his midfield because there were just too many to pick from.
Speaking to DailyMail he said, “Midfield is difficult. I’ve had the opportunities with (Zinedine) Zidane, Paul Scholes, Del Pierro, Frank Rijkaard. Lets go for Scholes. Scholes and Zidane. They could play together!”
Finally, he had to pick his forward line. Van Der Sar has played with and against many great strikers in his day including Van Nistelrooy and Theirry Henry but decided to exclude both among other greats in his final pick
“Up front there’s Patrick Kluivert, Rooney, Ronaldo – at my time was more playing like a right winger. ‘He was good, you could still reach him. You could still make sure that he did whatever you wanted him to do. You’d clap him for running back!”
“But I’ve got to pick a Dutch player so I’ll have Patrick Kluivert. He did not get everything out of his career, but in essence he was a great striker The there’s Marco van Basten. But I only played against him so I’ll go Dennis Bergkamp. I think he’s very appreciated here, especially in London”
Van Der Sar spent a majority of his career with Ajax and Manchester United and has won almost everything there is to win in club football. He is also the record holder for number of appearances fro his country Holland with 130 caps.
