Highlights: Giroud sees red as Arsenal suffer 2-1 defeat against Dinamo Zagreb

Olivier Giroud was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half as 10-men Arsenal were defeated in Croatia

Arsenal were stunned in their Champions League opener by Dinamo Zagreb as the Croatian outfit handed them a 2-1 defeat with striker Oliver Giroud getting sent off in the first half.

The Croats, who have been undefeated at home for more than a year, consolidated their fortress further by winning their first game in Europe's elite competition after 16 years- their last victory came in 1999 over Sturm Graz.

Arsene Wenger’s men started the game off well and had a host of chances in the first half but they failed to capitalise on them which ultimately came back to haunt the North Londoners as they were punished by the hosts in the 24th minute when Josip Pivaric's shot hit Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on its way past David Ospina to make it 1-0 in favour of Zagreb.

Giroud’s miserable night in front of goal took a turn for the worse when he was given his marching orders by the match official Ovidiu Hategan for a second bookable offence just before the break, adding to Arsenal's woes.

With the Gunners down to 10 men, pressure piled up in the second half and eventually, Dinamo struck again just before the hour mark as Fernandes rose at the near post to head home Paulo Machado's corner.

Arsenal's hopes to find a way back into the game came through a consolation goal from Theo Walcott 12 minutes from time, but Dinamo managed to hold on to their lead. Five minutes of stoppage time was allotted by the match official but even that wasn’t enough for the visitors and they were grateful to Ospina for a late save to stop Leonardo Sigali extending Dinamo's winning margin.

With this win, Dinamo have extended their unbeaten run to 42 games in all competitions.

Here are the goals from the game.
