Manchester City convincingly beat Liverpool 3-1 at the Etihad on Monday night in what was a match between last season’s champions and runners-up.

Stevan Jovetic scored twice before Sergio Aguero came on as a substitute to seal all three points for City. Liverpool got a consolation goal when Pablo Zabaleta scored an own-goal while trying to stop Rickie Lambert from scoring.

Man City 1-0 Liverpool: Jovetic (41’)

Liverpool’s new signing Alberto Moreno’s mistake led to the opening goal as Jovetic pounced on the opportunity when left back who was caught napping in the box.

The second goal also involved Jovetic in the build up. He flicked a pass from David Silva to release Samir Nasri down the right flank before making a run himself. Zabaleta held off a defender which allowed Nasri to cross into the box where an unmarked Jovetic was on hand to slot it past the goalkeeper and Glen Johnson who was covering the line.

Man City 3-0 Liverpool: Aguero (69’)

Sergio Aguero scored his second goal in as many games this season after coming on as a substitute. And he wasn’t even on the pitch for a full minute before making it 3-0. A beautifully weighted pass from Jesus Navas released the Argentine striker who held off a defender to score around a diving Simon Mignolet who was outside the six-yard box, way off his line.

Man City 3-1 Liverpool: Zabaleta (OG 83‘)

Liverpool finally pegged one back after Lambert came on. Sturridge wrestled a ball back from Martin Demichelis just outside their box on the right flank. He floated in a cross which was headed goalward but saved by Joe Hart. Zabaleta tried to keep Lambert at bay but ended up bundling the ball in with Hart trying to push it out. But Goal Line Technology was on hand to indicate to the referee that the ball had crossed the line and the goal was awarded.
