The on-field action between Chelsea and Manchester United is yet to commence but the off-field action has already commenced between both sides. Coaches of both sides have already started taking potshots at each other ahead of this hugely anticipated fixture. Ahead of the clash between the Blues and the Red Devils at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho’s bittersweet revelation about Roman Abramovich that, “He was never my friend”, is bound to make some waves.

The fixture will see the return of Mourinho to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea for the first time in a domestic competition. Mourinho further went on to clarify that his relationship with the Russian owner, was purely restricted to business.

He identified the relationship as that of a manager-owner, stating, “We always had the relationship of owner-manager; a very respectful relationship. We were never friends. We were never close to each other. So, no, he is just a person that I keep very respected.”

Mourinho and Chelsea supporters

Mourinho managed Chelsea between the years 2004-07 before returning for a second stint in 2013. His track record with Chelsea reflects an impressive three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and three League Cups.

Nevertheless, when questioned about his relationship with supporters, the former Blues coach accepted the possibility of a hostile reception. Mourinho during his time at Stamford Bridge has often been serenaded by the supporters and his sacking came as a shock to many of them.

Fingers were pointed at the players’ attitude and Mourinho’s status as a favorite continues to remain even though some may differ after the Portuguese snapped up the Red Devils’ job.

When quizzed about the supporters, Jose chose to answer in a warm manner. The warmth was almost palpable as he stated, “To say I care is not true. To be honest, when I go to a football match I am not focused on that. I am more focused on the game. I try to prepare myself for the match, so I cannot say I care. What can I expect? I don’t know. They can think about me and remember our great relation and have a good reaction.”

Mourinho’s words had a hint of nostalgia at times as he praised the club with extreme fondness. He went on to say that it was the supporter’s love and encouragement which always left him with a good feeling.

Manchester United was in action during the week and chose not to focus on the extra rest days available to his upcoming opponents. The Portuguese concluded on a positive note, stating that, “What Man United fans can expect from me is to play against Chelsea the same way I play against Fenerbahce, Liverpool, anyone – because that is my job”
