Lack of silverware for club and country denied Lionel Messi his sixth Ballon d’Or

Cristiano Ronaldo won his fourth Ballon d'Or recently which has divided views, with people who have a fondness towards Lionel Messi not happy with the result by France Football magazine. Sevilla manager, Jorge Sampaoli has spoken about the recent Ballon d'Or results and said that only Lionel Messi deserves to win the coveted individual award.

Sampaoli clearly was disappointed with Messi not winning his sixth Ballon d'Or and said, "Cristiano is deserving of any award that can be awarded to him, but it seems to me that there is a big difference between Messi and him. The rest need to compete for another ball because the golden one will always be Messi's.”

The Argentine finished runner-up behind Ronaldo this season as was the case on the last three previous occasions when the Portuguese won the elite prize. Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid finished third as La Liga’s monopoly continues on the world's biggest stage.

Ronaldo won almost double the points that were awarded to Messi as the Real Madrid superstar bagged 745 points compared to Messi's 316.

Xavi calls Messi the best; Ronaldo would love to play with Messi

Meanwhile, former Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez also spoke about the Ballon d’Or and controversially said that Ronaldo does not deserve to win the Ballon d'Or 2016: "Titles took precedence, while there are other years in which it is not like this and they value the best player in the world. Leo Messi is the best of all in spite of the titles that the other player has one."

Despite all the arguments over the two best footballers of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have always maintained an amicable relationship as was evident when Ronaldo said he would love to play with Messi, "It would be interesting to see us together in one team. I think great players should play together. So if we were on the same team, I think I would have more than him, but he wouldn't be far off."

Video technology will make football less dynamic, says Sampaoli

The former Chile boss also spoke about video technology, which was introduced for the first time in the Club World Cup which helped Real Madrid in their first game at the competition.

Sampaoli said, "Technologies are turning football into a new sport, it is not the football that we were used to. Every new rule has to do more with technology than with game, which is going to make it less dynamic, less intense and I don't really agree with that."

Luka Modric, Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo expressed their displeasure over the use of video technology in football.
