List of Chelsea managers in the last ten years

List of Chelsea managers

TURIN, ITALY – NOVEMBER 20: Roberto Di Matteo of Chelsea looks on prior to the UEFA Champions League Group E match between Juventus and Chelsea at the Juventus Arena on November 20, 2012 in Turin, Italy.

Claudio Ranieri was the first in the list of Chelsea managers in the last ten years when Roman Abramovich bought the Club in 2003, having been there since 2000 when he succeeded Graham Rix, and was the first of a now infamous list of Chelsea managers to have faced the sack, with Roberto di Matteo being the latest on the casualty list.

He is the ninth manager to be relieved from the Chelsea hotseat. Both Pep Guardiola and Rafael Benitez were touted to be the successor to that throne.

Success achieved at Stamford Bridge apparently does not seem to be criterion under which a manager’s tenure at Stamford Bridge is measured, if one does not meet the Russian owner’s demands.

Jose Mourinho, Chelsea’s most successful manager to date, spent three years in London during which period he won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup.

The closest to match that record is Carlo Ancelotti, who won an FA Cup and a League title. His temporary successor in Guus Hiddink won an FA Cup.

Experience also does not seem to be the gauge by which the Russian measures success. The quickfire sackings of Ancelotti and Brazilian trainer Luis Felipe Scolari, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and took Portugal to the finals of the European Championships in 2000 and the last four in Germany in 2006 was given the sack midway through the season after a poor run of games.

Avram Grant only lost out on the Champions League on penalties, but that was not reason enough to offer him the job beyond the end of the season.

Below is a list of managers to have been given the sack by Abramovich since he bought the Club in 2004. Please note that former Caretaker Manager Ray Wilkins, who held the job briefly between the departure of Mourinho and the arrival of Grant in 2007, and Roberto di Matteo have not been included in this list.
