Belgian international defender Vincent Kompany has signed a new five-year deal with Manchester City.

The deal is thought to be worth around £120,000 a-week with considerable add-ons and comes hot on the heels of David Silva also signing a new deal at The Etihad.

The 28-year old, unlike many other Manchester City recruits was a bargain buy from German Bundesliga side Hamburg for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £6 million. However, his performances have far outweighed the amount City paid for his services.

Kompany was brought to the club at the beginning of the 2008/09 season by Mark Hughes and soon became one of the central figures of the club. The Belgian international quickly rose through the ranks at The Etihad with his performances, becoming the cornerstone of the Citizens’ defence. The City captain was first given the armband in 2010 and has never looked back since.

Under the leadership of the Belgian, City has gone on to win two of the last three Premier League titles. He also has led the Blues to the FA Cup in 2011 and the League Cup last season. On a personal front, he was named the Premier League Player of the season during City’s triumphant season of 2011-12. He has also been a constant fixture in the PFA Team of the Year for the last three seasons.

Kompany: “Why would I go anywhere else?”

The defender seemed delighted at having extended his current deal and spoke of his future aspirations at the club: “This team is stronger now than it’s ever been; we have competition for places in every position and a dressing room full of exceptional, motivated people who want to continue making history together.

“Lifting two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Capital One Cup have been four of the best days of my life but I believe that there are many more of these occasions ahead.

“We have a common goal and so much to look forward to - a family of clubs, the opening of City Football Academy, exciting players coming through our youth system – why would I go anywhere else?”
