Manchester City vs Manchester United: The ever increasing goal difference

Results in the Premier League over the weekend witnessed both Manchester teams emerge victorious, but the number goals each side mustered is bound to worry Sir Alex Ferguson. Where Manchester United scored a solitary goal, City put five past Norwich.

So, what does the future hold for the title race? To say that it is over and out for United and they will not win their 20th league title this season is naïve, although many tabloids are stating that City have won the title already. In fact, there are twenty four games left this season. That’s seventy two points. The gap between City and United at the time of writing this is a mere five. Two losses for City and United can capitalise by winning both of them. Therefore, United jump above City. If this was the situation near the end of the season, it would be understandable but it is still early.

But it’s the number of goals which is bound to worry many United fans. Their goal difference is plus eighteen whereas City is on a massive plus thirty five. If this was any other season, pundits would be talking about United being an unstoppable force but City have somehow shown everybody that they have the winning touch in the Premier League. Javier Hernandez, with six goals this season, is United’s second top scorer and suffered an injury on Saturday, delivering a huge blow to Sir Alex’s team. City meanwhile have two players who are match fit and have each scored more goals than United’s leading man Wayne Rooney. The United faithful worried much?

With their recent meeting earlier in the season when United were played out of the park as they got beaten 6-1 at Old Trafford, the third round of the FA Cup was drawn yesterday. Lo and behold, they will face each other with some other good ties also evident, with Chelsea set to face Portsmouth and Arsenal due to play Leeds. When City and United met last season in the FA Cup, City were the victors but only by a 1-0 score line. Will the blue side of Manchester be victorious in this game like they have been so far this season? Or will United continue their winning ways and defeat them in January, therefore reclaiming their title as the best side in Manchester?

Only time will tell.
