Peter Schmeichel has laid into former club Manchester United, claiming that the Red Devils have bored the Dane to death. Schmeichel, who has just seen his son Kasper Schmeichel lift the Premier League trophy with Leicester City, disagrees with Louis van Gaal’s style and hopes that Zlatan Ibrahimovic comes to Old Trafford next season.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Schmeichel was very critical of Manchester United and pulled no punches while describing their style of play, saying “Manchester United - a club that I love and have followed since I was a kid - have bored me to death this season.”

Louis van Gaal’s side have been accused of boring football repeatedly this season, and it’s in stark contrast to the football Schmeichel saw the Red Devils play under Sir Alex Ferguson. The Dane feels the Dutch manager has been bad for United, saying “We are one of those clubs that has been dragged in completely the wrong direction.

“We never used to play football the way we play now. We never played for 1-0 and then defend. We always went for the second goal and the third.”

Schmeichel wants Zlatan Ibrahimovic to sign for Manchester United

The Dane played under Sir Alex over 400 times and bemoaned the failure of his legacy, saying “All the hard work that Sir Alex put in to recover what was there from Sir Matt Busby has been undone in a very short period of time. I, as a fan, want to be winning but to entertain equally as much too. I want exciting players.”

Schmeichel then referenced the rumour that Zlatan Ibrahimovic would sign for Manchester United, a rumour that has since been debunked by his agent. However, that did not stop Schmeichel from coveting the Swede, who he likened to Cantona, saying “I read about Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the newspapers. I would love for him to come to Manchester United, I've said this for a long time.”

“He was born to play for Manchester United. He's like an Eric Cantona, who can inspire all the guys in the dressing room but also the supporters. That's what it's all about. It's not about having a Sunday nap at Old Trafford.”
