Future Chelse star?

The talented midfielder was very close to joining Chelsea in the summer transfer window. But, in the last moment, a deal did not go through because of Barkley's long-term hamstring injury.

With Barkley just 2 weeks from making a return to competitive football, Chelsea and even Tottenham are said to be interested in signing the versatile midfielder.

The heart of the matter

Chelsea are desperately looking to boost their midfield and with Antonio Conte making a tactical switch to a five-man midfield in the big matches, Barkley's pace, runs and direct style of play will definitely add an extra dimension and creativity to the jaded Blue's lineup.

Tottenham Hotspur are also extremely keen on signing the Everton man, but it is believed that Chelsea are way ahead in the race and are increasingly confident of sealing the deal in the early days of January.

With Barkley's contract running out, a cut-price deal of £20 million might be enough to land the talented England international.

Author's take

Although Barkley has barely kicked a football this season, there is no denying the obvious talent and class the Everton man possesses. With the 24-year-old available for a very reasonable price in January due to his contract situation, Chelsea will certainly be well served if they manage to secure the services of the wantaway Everton star.
