Real Madrid could face Atletico Madrid and Barcelona in successive Copa del Rey rounds

Real Madrid can potentially face Barcelona in the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey

Real Madrid have been handed an extremely tough draw in their defense of the Copa del Rey as they have been drawn to face rivals Atletico Madrid in the round of 16, if they win their 4th round fixture against Cornella. Similarly, if they manage to defeat Atletico Madrid, they have a potential match up with Barcelona that awaits them in the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid overcame both Atletico and Barcelona in last year’s competition, as they beat Atletico 5-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals and Gareth Bale’s incredible solo effort saw them defeat Barcelona 2-1 in the finals last year.

They are up against third tier Cornella in the 4th round, and Atletico face L'Hospitalet, also of Segunda B, with the first leg set to be on 29th October. Meanwhile, Barcelona face off against Huesca, and if they go through, are set to face either Real Valladolid or Elche in the round of 16, before the potential ‘El Clasico’ in the quarterfinals.

Barcelona are currently top of La Liga after an unbeaten start to the season, while the Madrid teams, Real and Atletico are in fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are to face each other in the La Liga on 26th October with Luis Suarez set to return from his 4-month ban which he received during the World Cup for his offense against Italy.
