Manchester United are set to make a final bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels before moving their attention elsewhere.

United have been tracking Hummels for some time now but they have been consistently frustrated in their pursuit of the player with Dortmund unwilling to sell and Hummels perfectly content to stay with the German side.

Nevertheless reports in Germany suggest that new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has sanctioned a take it or leave it bid of £20 million. The club are in desperate need of a new central defender following the departure of Rio Ferdinand and club captain Nemanja Vidic.

Hummels is currently with Germany for the World Cup but Hummels missed Germany’s last match due to injury. In the 2-1 victory over Algeria it was clear that the Germans were missing Hummels’ commanding presence at the back and they will be hoping he is able to face France in the next round.

Aside from Hummels Manchester United are also targeting Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen and Feyenoord centre back Stefan De Vrij.
