Mats Julian Hummels is a German footballer who plays for German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and the German national team, as a central defender. Hummels is a product of Bayern Munich's youth academy and signed his first professional contract on 19 December 2006, until 2010. On 19 May 2007, in the season's final match, he played his first league game with the first team, in a 5–2 home routing of 1. FSV Mainz 05. In January 2008, Hummels joined Borussia Dortmund, initially on loan, wasting no time to establish himself as first-choice. He has attracted praise from pundits and coaches alike, and he is considered one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga, and in Europe. Hummels won the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund in 2011 as well as 2012. Hummels scored a goal as Borussia Dortmund won the DFB-Pokal in 2012 5-2 against Bayern Munich. On 3 June 2012, Hummels signed a new contract that will keep him at Borussia Dortmund until the summer of 2017. Hummels was called by the under-21 team for the 2009 European Championship. He made his senior team debut in a friendly against Malta on 13 May 2010 in Aachen.
