Ronald Koeman says Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho should learn from Arsene Wenger

Ronald Koeman tells Mourinho to adopt Wenger’s style

Southampton’s manager Ronald Koeman has advised Jose Mourinho to adopt his rival Arsene Wenger’s playing style, per Mirror. The Dutchman feels the Portuguese should ditch his defensive style and adopt Wenger’s possession based football if he wants to progress in the league.

The Chelsea manager is facing the worst season in his career as a manager and Koeman, who has worked with Mourinho during his time at Barcelona, believes it is because the Chelsea players have lost their killer instinct under the Portuguese’s guidance. The men from Stamford Bridge are sitting in the bottom half of the table at 16th place and have never been in such a precarious position since Roman Abramovich took over.

The Southampton manager who beat Chelsea 3-1 before the international break, said: “Chelsea prefer to defend when attacking is also an option.

“Mourinho always chooses to defend. Even if his team goes 1-0 up, they would rather defend their lead than try to score more goals.”

Arsenal can kill an opponent: Koeman

He went on to praise Arsenal’s performance against Manchester United and pointed out the areas where Chelsea are lacking compared to the Gunners.

The 52-year old added, "Arsenal can kill an opponent. That is why their victory against Manchester United was so impressive. Attacking-wise, they completely destroyed United. For 20 minutes, they played the most fantastic football, while Chelsea do the opposite thing. By defending, Chelsea give their opponent a chance to come back in the game.”

Arsenal in their last match against United destroyed them 3-0 at the Emirates stadium courtesy of two goals from Alexis Sanchez and one from Mesut Ozil.

It was shameful from Mourinho to blame referees: Koeman

Koeman though did not approve of Mourinho’s antics in the post-match conference where he was seen criticising the referees. According to the Dutchman even his team were deprived of two penalties which they rightfully deserved.

“It was a shame that Mourinho was putting attention on the referee after we beat them,” said Koeman “he wanted to have a penalty in the first half. But, in the first half at Stamford Bridge, Southampton should have had two penalties.”

Compared to last season even Southampton are under performing, but the only difference is that the men from Saint Mary’s Stadium are in the top half of the table while Chelsea are not. While regulars like Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane, who were their stars from last season, were not at their peak at the begining of the season, it seems like they are back to their best.
