Rumour: Jose Mourinho looking at Brad Friedel to potentially replace Petr Cech if he leaves

Brad Friedel rumoured to be the replacement for Petr Cech if the latter leaves

Brad Friedel and Robert Green are two possible people Chelsea could look to sign to replace Petr Cech if the latter decides to leave in pursuit of regular football. Cech, who won his 12th winners medal with Chelsea this Sunday in the League Cup victory might end up changing clubs this summer as he wants regular first-team football.

The southpaw, who has been overshadowed by Thibaut Courtois, was picked over the 22-year-old Belgian for the Capital One Cup final at the Wembley stadium against Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea would ideally want to keep the Czech Republic goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge, but might find it hard due to the interest shown by several teams like Arsenal, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco and Roma.

The unwavering interest shown by the large number of top class teams is what has caused the Blues to think of a replacement for the goalkeeper who has spent 11 years at the club. Although Courtois is seen as the first choice goalkeeper for the club for many years to come, an experienced replacement will definitely come in handy.

Brad Friedel has the experience but might be too old

44-year-old Brad Friedel is the oddball in the list of possible goalkeepers, which consist of names like Robert Green, Craig Gordon, Shay Given and John Ruddy.

Although Schwarzer was signed by Chelsea at the age of 40 back in 2013, Freidel would be four years older. Mourinho would ideally like a goalkeeper who is fine being the second or third choice, while having sufficient first team experience and will find all these characters in Friedel.

Friedel has made 450 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham. He also has European experience which will give him an edge over the rest of the goalkeepers in the list. The American has not yet made an appearance for Spurs this year after being pushed down the pecking order due to the signing of goalkeeper Michel Vorm.
