Jose Mourinho post-match Interview Chelsea 1-3 Southampton
Jose Mourinho spoke for seven minutes about various factors related to the match, Chelsea and the players

Defending champions Chelsea lost yet another game in the Premier League with Southampton coming away from Stamford Bridge with all three points after an impressive 3-1 victory. Goals from Steven Davis, Saido Mane and Graziano Pelle gave pushed the Saints up the table to ninth after a see-saw start to the campaign.

Meanwhile, the Blues are now 16th with just eight points from eight games. And Jose Mourinho was at his best (or was it worst?) again in the post-match press conference when he was asked to comment about the performance.

What is remarkable is that Mourinho was asked only one question. The reporter was just trying to warm up with the first question when he said, “Jose, commiserations, what did you make of your team’s performance?”

But instead of getting an answer where managers sum up their team’s performances, Mourinho ranted for a full seven minutes!

He started off by saying he doesn’t run away from responsibilities and wanted to be honest about the referee’s decision to not award a penalty when the score was 1-1. He was also not bothered about any impending punishment from the FA for publicly criticizing the referee.

“If the FA want to punish me, they can punish me,” he said. “They don’t punish other managers.

“Referees are afraid to give decisions to Chelsea. We are always punished. Clear penalties are not given,” referring to Radamel Falcao getting a yellow card instead of a penalty by referee Robert Madley.

Mourinho then even went on to talk about the Champions League referees, where five officials are available, saying his team was unlucky to not get decisions. He said this penalty call was crucial because ‘the team collapsed mentally and psychologically’. “It looks like good players are bad players.”

Chelsea can sack me, I won’t resign: Jose Mourinho

Now under more pressure to deliver results, Mourinho is finding it tougher than ever in his third season with the Blues. While there were a few boos at Stamford Bridge after the game, the Portuguese boss was adamant that he would not resign after the club’s worst start since 1978/79 – the season Chelsea were relegated.

Mourinho said: “I want to make it clear. One, I don't run away. Two, if the club want to sack me they have to sack me because I am not running away from my responsibilities or my team.”

The Blues are now 10 points behind league leaders Manchester City whose goal difference is 17 goals better off than the Stamford Bridge side. And Mourinho was honest when he said it was tough to become champions but expected the Blues to finish in the top four.

“To be champions now is very difficult because the distance is considerable,” Mourinho explained. “But I am more than convinced that we will finish in the top four, and when the season is so bad if you finish in the top four it is OK.

Mourinho also claimed that sackig him would be a mistake because he was the best manager the club ever had in its history.

“Third, and I think this is even more important than the first and the second, it is a crucial moment in the history of this club. You know why? Because if they sack me they sack the best manager this club had.”
