Lionel Messi was hit by a bottle thrown from the stands during Barcelona’s 0-1 win over Valencia at Mestalla.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was hit on his head by a water bottle which was thrown from the stands at Valencia’s home ground Mestalla after Sergio Busquets had scored winner for the Catalan side in the 94th minute to win 0-1. The incident occurred right after the team celebration when all of them piled on top of another.

Despite complaining to referee David Fernandez Borbalan, his calls for a foul was rejected straight away, and instead a yellow card was issued to the Argentinean for wasting time. Following the match, he was seen receiving treatment from the team physio for a cut on his forehead.

Valencia later released an official statement, promising to take action against the felon.

"Valencia CF regret and condemn the isolated incident in the game against FC Barcelona, in which a small, uncapped bottle of water was thrown from the stands at opposition player Lionel Messi," read the statement."The club will endeavour to locate the person who threw the bottle, and they will be banned for life from Mestalla. Valencia CF operate a zero tolerance policy on such actions and rigorously enforce all security measures set out by legislation."
