Sergio Aguero reveals how he first met close friend Lionel Messi

Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi are getting ready for the Copa America final as they face Chile in the final showdown. Messi and Aguero have been in fine form in the tournament as they reached the final of the tournament in Chile.

But rewind back to Aguero’s first meeting with Messi and it is an awkward and interesting one. The Manchester City striker reveals in this video how his friendship with Barcelona star Lionel Messi didn’t have the most auspicious of starts.

He talks about how they first met in the Argentina U-17 squad, not realizing that Messi was the one who was already a household name in Argentina for his exploits with the Barcelona youth team.

Aguero heard Messi talking but didn’t know who he was, so asked him. Here is Aguero’s description of the entire incident:

I asked him, ‘What is your name?’ He said “Leo” and I asked “and what’s your last name?”. He said “Messi” and I didn’t know him. I asked him again for his last name to see if it sounded familiar. He said “Messi!” again. Then he laughed and we all laughed.

They made fun of me. I remembered later that there was a kid who had arrived at Barcelona when he was 12, and realised that it must have been him. That’s how we met.

Aguero and Messi are now close friends and the Barcelona star even obliged to write the prologue when the Manchester City forward wrote a book. The two are close friends now after playing together in the national team for so many years.

Argentina will be hoping that Messi and Aguero’s friendship clicks on the pitch when they face Chile in the Copa America final.
